Complete waste of time

Well well...

my first 'review' on IMDb. Until now I've mostly read others opinions and reviews, usually ignoring well-meant and sincere advises to NOT watch certain movies. Let me just say: I hope I can spare some people 90 minutes of utter misery by saying DO NOT WATCH THIS MOVIE! I'm quite a fan of this type of movies, where usually some kind of animal or creature, created by some chemical waste or awakened from a centuries long slumber, is threatening a crew or city and killing/destroying everything in it's wake. I'm used to such movies not rating too high on IMDb as well. But this one definitely beats everything when it comes to being complete crap.

The storyline... I'm not really sure there was one. The special effects... imagine a 100foot crocodile making it's way into the water, without even the slightest ripple in the water surface; amazing? Not as amazing as how it stampedes around noisy like a herd of mammoths in one scene, yet manages to sneak up on our brave heroes without a sound in the next.

One other annoying thing was the sound; I don't know if my sound system was mucking up on me, but 3/4 of the dialogs were impossible to hear if you don't want to actively raise and lower your volume continuously. Especially when a 'background' music or tune is playing (which is most of the time), it becomes impossible to hear what is being said. Learn to read lips or make sure you have the subtitles on.

Ah to cut it short, this really is a miserable attempt at a movie. Feel absolutely free to watch it, but don't say you weren't warned.

Has a couple of OK fights

But not much more than that. The cast is capable and the fights are OK but that's about it. I wonder if Ms. Nielsen's headaches in the film were actually from being in such a wasted movie. She and the rest of the cast deserve better than this film.

I must say this one surprised me, it was better than i thought it would be. Joakim Nätterqvist did an awesome performance, i've met him several times since he's my cousins ex so i know him personally and this just what he needed, might this be a new start for a career for Jocke? who knows.

To the movie now...

When title shows up and the beautiful music is being played in the background i'm getting a good felling about it. But then the narrator starts to talk and i have to say he didn't fit in any good, it was just like watching Animal planet. The narrator didn't fit in at all, in fact some people in the audience actually started to laugh, that's rare.

I've heard that some have said that this is the best Swedish movie ever made. For me that's not true, i say that Evil is the best Swedish film. But Arn is just what we in Sweden needed. For all the shitty movies that have been made this was a lift. Perhaps now Sweden will be marked on the map again in film making. Since Bergman died it has been rough for us to get attention in movie making. So i hope Arn goes internationally, due to the fact that they speak more English than Swedish.

But when i've heard from Joakim Nätterqvist that they were gonna re-cut the movie to suit a more younger audience i was a bit worried, i didn't want it to be an Astrid Lindgren movie. But it didn't turn out that way, some parts were actually pretty violent and contained some gore. I've seen worse though but that's something i would like to warn all the sensitive audience's for.

The music for the movie was perfect in my opinion, i don't know who wrote it but my hat goes of for that person.

Darna......the superhero of choice?!?!?!

One thing I find difficult with these movies is to review them with a certain amount of objectivity. As a rule I really like superhero/action movies and I normally have a certain amount of grace towards them even if they are considered bad by the general population. For me as long as the actoractress in the lead role brings to the real a certain amount of gravitas or believability I can tend to look over glaring plot holes or bad dialogue.

There have been only a handful of actors who you could actually say fitted the role to a tee.....Christopher Reeve (Superman), Lynda Carter (Wonder Woman), Christian Bale (Batman), Helen Slater (Supergirl), Robert Downey Jr (Ironman), Tobey MacGuire (Spiderman).

With the Darna series there have been many actresses over the years that have fitted into the red boots and costume. Almost all people would say that Vilma Santos was the quintessential Darna. However, looking at the movies made in the 90's both Nanette Medved and Anjanette Abeyari both did a very good job of the role.

Sure the stories weren't going to win an academy award but both girls in their respective movies tried to give Darna a certain amount of respect.

In this outing...an origin story of some description...Nanette gets to don the red boots and tights in which she looks very good. As a movie the production values were actually quite good. The setup of Edu Manzano as the villain of the piece was very well done at the beginning and you actually believe that he is very dangerous. Nanette receiving the stone and transforming was also excellently done.

I won't go into many details of the story but suffice to say it wasn't spectacular but it wasn't bad. If anything it was a little more serious than the sequel with Anjanette and didn't have any of the camp quality. The action set pieces were well done for Fillipino standards and Nanette actually looks like she could crack a few heads. I think she even did a few of her own stunts.

Overall, the Nanette, Darna turns out to be OK. A little serious for me but still resonating with what Darna is about.

It does not have a bad script but the budget of this little movie is a very tiny.I think is the budget of a car only.This is an action movie.Because i am a Cyntnthia Rothrock fan i thought that this movie will not disappoint because i thought it will have great fights scenes with her.But Cynthia don't fight in this movie, she just shoots here and there. A worthy addition to Meiko Kaji's filmography now on DVD

Wandering Ginza Butterfly Reviewed by Tim Irwin This is the first time this film has been released on DVD and I am quite excited. It's one of the many movies that the Toei Company made in the early 1970's about the Yakuza and various gangster activities in Tokyo. It features Meiko Kaji, the star of numerous franchises during the 1970's. She was not only Lady Snowblood before Uma Thurman and Quentin Tarantino came along, she was also in Stray Cat Rock: Sex Hunter and other films from that franchise, and she was Prisoner 701 in the Joshuu series. Not to mention the various Kinji Fukasaku films she starred in.

And now the folks at Synapse Films recently put together this transfer and presented us with another one of Meiko's films. Be careful going into it, though, because if you're expecting something like Yakuza Deka (with Sonny Chiba, who starred in Wandering Ginza Butterfly 2 with Meiko) you might be disappointed. This is a Yakuza film, to be sure, but it's more of a drama than an action or gangster movie.

Meiko is Nami and is again in prison. Same name, same story as the Joshuu films, but no matter. This time she's just been released after three years hard time. She heads back to Tokyo to meet up with her uncle, who owns a billiard hall and taught her how to hustle pool. She gets involved with a local semi-gangster, Ryuji, who hooks the various sex clubs up with hostesses. Since she's rather attractive (and tough) she soon becomes one of the best hostesses around: pretty enough to attract clientèle and mean enough to make sure they pay.

But of course the Owada clan is muscling in on the Ginza neighborhood, and soon the club's owner finds she is being bullied into selling the club to Owada or forfeiting it outright. This is when Nami gets a chance to pay back the kindness shown to her by Ryuji and the club's Madam.

There is quite a bit going on in the story, including several side plots having to do with Nami's past and how she ended up in prison. The first 75 minutes of the film are almost solely concerned with these flashbacks and her current hostessing. This is not a bad thing, but if you're expecting geysers of blood at every turn you might become slightly bored.

Then, in the final ten minutes, the film erupts in an orgy of violence. It's almost like the recent films of Takeshi Kitano, where everything is calm and peaceful before exploding in brief and brutal violence. The main difference is that here the small amount of violence follows the same style as Lady Snowblood, with the slashing and stabbing. One might also expect a fair amount of sex and nudity, much like Female Prisoner #701: Scorpion. However, almost all the nudity is discreet and only present in pinup posters on a wall.

From a production standpoint, Wandering Ginza Butterfly is very similar to other Japanese gangster films from the same time period. There are moments of stylish directing, such as the camera that searches the background until it finds the one person it wants to portray. Other than that everything merely exists to push the story along. Kaji has the physical presence and beauty to convincingly play Nami, and the other actors also turn in fine performances.

From a DVD standpoint the transfer is very well done. The Japanese mono soundtrack is present with optional English subtitles, and the picture is very clear and crisp, especially for an older foreign film.

This is definitely worth catching, especially for those hardcore fans of Meiko Kaji. Keep in mind, however, that it's not one of your standard pinky violence flicks; here the blood and nudity is kept fairly well under wraps. Regardless, it's short, sweet and climaxes with a payoff worthy of any fan of the genre.

Somewhat Formulaic but Entertaining Martial Arts Action

Two circus performers and martial artists are sent to deliver a trunk full of gold to a town experiencing famine and a siege of marauders. The marauders, of course, are waiting for them around every corner and they are besieged at each step. As much time is taken up with very entertaining and fast paced fight scenes as plot exposition. The writer also added elements of romantic tension and some vaguely historical political references to lend the film a little more interest and complexity than the genre norm. The romantic element is never tedious and gives the characters more depth than those of more typical martial arts action films.

The paragraph above describes about half the plot. To avoid a spoiler I can not say anything about the remainder of the film.

All considered, Bu Bu Zhui Zong (or Chase Step by Step) is a fairly enjoyable action film with an attractive and reasonably talented cast. The story moves quickly in order to avoid the boredom its core simplicity would have normally engendered, but remains easy to follow. The English language version is better dubbed than average and the dialog is above generally genre standards while the cinematography is pretty average.

Recommended for martial arts fans

Charlie's Angelic Homage

Within three seconds of the start of the movie, there is an explosion followed by an engaging car chase. That alone is enough for any fan of action to start enjoying this movie.

The script starts off very sharp, blending character building with progressive, thrilling, action sequences.

Big cast, but they are given time to be introduced into the story fittingly. And Rajesh Khanna is well placed in the starring role, shorn of his usual romantic overtones, he capably explores the role of a morally guided man on a mission.

Amrish Puri demonstrates why he is a Legend. He is not just a moustache-twirling, pantomime villain, there is depth to his character of a man corrupted by his ego.

Shabana Azmi is a real draw here because she brings a sensitive vulnerability to her character which is kind of wasted in an action movie like this.

Unfortunately, the movie starts to drag around halfway, with dumb plot vehicles and dumber acting. Maybe the production was hampered, but somehow it's as if the second half was the work of a different director than of the first half.

But then Amrish Puri comes back and salvages thing to an extent. Good thing that PETA didn't see this movie, Puri can be seen getting rather freaky with a snake in a very disturbing scene.

There's lot of good comedy set-ups, some intentional, thanks to Mithun and the divine Parveen Babi. And some unintentional, such as characters' names changing randomly (Kader becomes Ader, Shalini becomes Kamini), Rajesh Khanna's William Shatner-like delivery, the mother characters' aptitude for mortality, atrociously bad acting from the actor playing "Kader", male stunt doubles for women, bad foley effects such as a person imitating the barking of a dog, and most of all, Shabana Azmi looking embarrassingly cute when her character's meant to be taken seriously.

The ending is nonsensically convoluted, but ties things up... probably.

The first few songs are a bit of a nuisance, especially having to endure watching Zeenat Aman flipping around like a deranged, yodelling circus acrobat. But the later songs are enjoyable thanks to Babi, Mithun, more consistent music and the rest.

Overall, it's worth a watch for fans of the stars featuring here, especially the wonderful Shabana Azmi, but not much else to recommend it.

I saw this film last and and I must say that I was very dissapointed. It is boring and the film does not even reach the two hour point. The characters were not that interesting and you really don't come to care about them. The film does not really open you up to the lives of these terrorists. It seems a bit cardboard as opposed to real warmth. Anyway, I don't recommend it.

Nothing new about the story, but the music and Chiranjeevi appearing as Atma Rao have saved the film.Soundarya also does very well in a role where in one of the few instances the female lead gets a sizable role to play.The film is a full fledged typical family entertainer with good music and trade mark Chiranjeevi comedy. ManiSharma has given good tunes for this film and this has elevated the film.The other characters are adequate and Kota Srinivas Rao excels in the short role that he has been given. All said and done a regular Chiranjeevi pot boiler which one can enjoy because of his performance and the good music, not to mention his dances.The item song with Simran is an added attraction for his fans and it obviously gets the most attention in the film of Chiru's dances.

the pinnacle of a so bad it is good animated film.

to start off I will say I love Japanese animation shows like digimon and yugioh helped me get into foreign animation from other countries. One country I have been interested in for a while is Korea. Korea has made some great animated films like my beautiful girl mari, yobi the five tailed fox and even the film wonderful days (or sky blue in some territories) has some of the best animation I have ever seen. now this was a low budget attempt to knock off the Japanese anime series mazinger z but it does it in such a way it hilarious. the voice acting is hilariously bad with actors either too over the top or so monotone you would swear they were Microsoft Sam. animation for the most part is decent but then they cut corners like dragging mazinger (yes they did not even change the robot's name? across the screen flying his fist straight into missiles. some characters disappear and reappear and sometimes outer space turns into a blue sky. all the characters are puppets and the main villain is a evil robotic king named Alfred! I would tell you the plot but if there i one I cant find it because it is buried among a mound hilariously bad voice acting and animation! if you like so bad its good anime like garzey's wing, MD geist or bible black (though that one is a porno but with hilariously bad dubbing)than this is thee title for you along with Joseph lai's other productions!
