Dilim: Not so good, but certainly better than most Tagalog movies
DILIM is the story of a dark vigilante roaming the streets, brutally killing criminals. Yes, it does sound a little "old story" but there are many things to be discussed about the film. There were numerous moments where DILIM felt very tacky and corny because it employed the overly-used bullet-time graphic style pioneered by the Matrix. There were two distinct scenes which were straight out of the Matrix movie. The film also employed a very raw rendering of special effects. The insistence to use CGI on this project seems like it is a stubborn effort to create a work which is beyond their funding or skill. But then again, the producers of this project may have hoped that a big studio would pick their project and fund them properly to clean and polish the bad effects. It also had a very ridiculous theme song on the intro which immediately lessened the credibility of the film. At which point, you'd want to laugh out loud and turn off the movie, jumping to the conclusion that it was going to be another badly-made silly Tagalog film.
But it really is not. At least, DILIM manages to be deserving of your attention. A cleaner, more tight movie than most of the works of popular Tagalog films that you get from Regal, Viva, or Seiko. The very few errors or faults of this movie make it a masterpiece compared to all of last year's MMFF entries.
DILIM attempts to make a sort of a dark superhero movie the likes of The Crow or Punisher. But what makes DILIM better than the other local superhero movies or TV shows that have recently gone out is that it employs a very Filipino concept, without making it too corny or without adulterating it too much. The very sad superhero creations of late such as GMA's "Capt. Barbell", "Darna" and ABS-CBN's "Kristala" have all proved to be creations worse than what may be considered low-quality production. Those shows may have the funding and the production resources, but a production of DILIM makes them so little. Even the action scenes were more convincing than most of the old Tagalog movies. I'd like to see director Topel Lee make a serious action movie.
The plot, concept and storyline may seem to be a great big cliché, but it certainly has its excellent points. The flaws are very minimal in terms of consistency, the impact is more or less amusing, but not outstanding (too bad the VCD cover reveals a spoiler), and the originality is emphasized only in the usage of Filipino supernatural concepts. I most especially admire the concept that the main villain played by Emilio Garcia is a criminal underworld thug who drinks a potion that grants him supernatural strength. I also am amused by the usage of the police officers who investigate the DILIM vigilante. The concept is cliché, but it was delivered well without making it look fake and un-interesting. I didn't like, however, the predictability and the inconsistency of the twist in the end as far as the policemen are concerned.
DILIM is a raw project, rough and amateurish. It may have been crammed with pretentious scenes, but it somehow makes up with its consistency. It manages to be FAR more BETTER than most of the popular Tagalog movies that have come out lately. In its cliché image, it can still manage to brag as having a bit more originality than the rest of the Tagalog films that big companies like Viva, Seiko, and Regal can produce. It may not be the best Tagalog movie you've seen, but it certainly is worth your attention. You can find and buy DILIM on CD & DVD shops and/or rent it on Video Rental Shops as well.

You know...this was terrible...
Where do I start? The plot of the movie, which is about a love between two high school students during wartime, while one is a living weapon, and their struggle to maintain that love is a very good plot. It is based on a manga by Shin Takahashi which was also turned into an anime in 2002, both of which I have yet to read or see.
This review is about this live action adaptation however. Sadly, this honest to goodness was a terrible movie. It isn't as if one could site certain aspects, and say, for instance, the budget is at fault, or the acting is to blame. It is, sadly, a series of underwhelming and ineffectual elements that bring this film down.
The acting is poor. Not to say Aki Maeda and Shunsuke Kubozuka are bad actors, but they didn't have much to work with, and seemed miscast. Neither seemed to have the physical range to draw the viewer in the story as well as being too old for their parts to a distracting degree.
The script was weak, the leads act unrealistically, and behave irrationally. The film also plays for the heartstrings, but ends up being predictable, all the while not being compelling, and under-developing the characters. There are also pacing issues.
Visually, it is unremarkable. The film uses green screen heavily and unnecessarily in too many scenes. The other special effects also have a cheap look to them, especially where minimalistic practical special effects could have been used. There is also no visual flair, as if there were no cinematographer or art designer to make the scenes look consistent and stimulating.
The music and sound effects were fine, but unremarkable.
Overall, the movie isn't devoid of enjoyment, and fans of the series shouldn't be discouraged to see it at least once just for the sake of completion. People unfamiliar with Saikano, this probably isn't the place to jump in as it isn't a very good movie or melodrama. It isn't the movie or the cast and crews fault, it just isn't inspired, and that is what kills it.

Why aren't more films (especially American) more like Meatball Machine?
This is my first official on-line review and I am charged with "electrical ecstasy" after having chosen "Meatball Machine" as my first endeavor. This is a review, so I'll try to stick to mere reflection and gut emotion.
I mean, this is one creative piece of work even though it is clearly inspired by the now classic TETSUO! So what if it's not all original? I own both of these films and though Tetsuo is one strange son of a bitch, Meatball Machine is far superior and can be sat through without the strong desire to indulge in a dose of mind altering drugs to clarify film significance. Meatball Machine is as elaborate in it's story as it is in its high influx of blood and gore. Thank you Jesus for Japanese Cinema!
Simply put, the last time my dreams were overrun by visions of horror happened after watching Nightmare on Elm Street when I was 7 or so. I could picture in my dreams a tongue coming out of a telephone for weeks on end. This time (at 31) my dreams were pleasantly awe inspiring.
In this film human bodies are host to Aliens whose sole purpose is to try and fulfill their never ending quench for human flesh and blood. Humans become flesh eating cyborgs!!! There's more!!! Fight scenes!! Great Music!! Great point-of-view shots! Decent acting by the woman Cyborg (at least better than her male counterpart). The fight seen in the end is worth watching ten or twenty times.
Oh, and did I forget to mention it's a Love story! Wow, I hate love stories but this takes the cake!
I can't wait to have friends over to watch this film once more just to see the reaction on their faces. Sadly, I took time to write this review because I'm afraid most friends and family wont understand Meatball Machine. The truth is America as a whole is not prepared for Meatball Machine.
Lastly, My wife walked in while I was watching the climactic fight scene at the end and she was speechless. Normally she says something like "why are you watching that junk?" This time she had nothing to say. I was glad!
This is not junk. This isn't just SPLATTER (splatter for the sake of splatter is also great). This is Art my friends. Art.

Who s Quentin ? a critical view and explanation
In Luxembourg, a small country in central Europe, many youngsters are dreaming of making films. Sacha Bachim and his friends are some of those eager young minds. But making a film is much more than taking daddy's handy cam and watching Pulp Fiction. "Who's Quentin?" is a mess...the editing is chaotic the plot...hey was there even a plot? I suggest that those youngsters should continue watching Tarantino movies but not start imitating him. That is why the movie is so poor, it lacks of imagination...of everything! Still amazing how this movie could be screened in a major cinema in Luxembourg. There are a lot of world class amateur films, mostly short films, but this movie in such a bad sound and visual quality(it is a low-budget movie of course and i doubt if there was even used separate microphones) is not worth watching. It is normal that many people left the cinema not amused because in Luxembourg a movie ticket costs around 7 Euro(9.5 US Dollar) and people want to see something for their money. This movie is definitely not worth watching, it reminds me of school-films and i don't think it has earned its place here at this Database.

All you can expect from horror... and much more!!!
Wow... seems like somebody dropped some cameras over Greece... and they immediately knew how to use them!!! This little gem has everything you would expect from a horror movie and offers much more yet. Of course you have seen most of it somewhere else... the stuff's not really new, isn't it? And yes, in some parts it seemed to me like a Greek version of "28 days later". But I've rarely seen Zombie's heads being destroyed in so many different ways. Headshots, lots of (almost obligatory) decapitations, head splitting and much more. Yes, this is definitely for the real gore-hounds among you! Acting, sets, make-up, etc. were OK but the camera work and editing were really cool in some parts... especially in the ending scene. If you're in the mood for about one and a half hours of good old bloody fun try to grab this. Highly recommended (for fans of the genre). To the producers: more of this, please!!!

PTU File: Death Trap is a 90+ minute action flick that runs like a soap opera, and that's not a good thing. (*1/2 out of * * * *)
PTU File: Death Trap (2005) is a 90+ minute action flick that runs like a soap opera, and that's not a good thing. Worst of all, it throws in all of the cop movie clichés from the book.
The multiple story lines all lead to the big finale in which a gang holds a medical center hostage. Before this occurs, we meet a bunch of characters, who will be affected by the event.
Yeung Fong Fong (Kristy Yang), is a PTU officer, who thinks her husband Ka Ho, a doctor, is eyeing his friend and partner; Rebecca (Anya) is an undercover cop trying to helping her police superior, Wong (Michael Wong) catch a merchant known as Yu Fei; four friends try to make it in the music business, but they need money fast; there's a femme fatale, Mei Wai (Hanabi Kim) added into the mix (I wish there were more ideas done with this character).
There are so many clichés in PTU File: Death Trap, such as the undercover cop who is promised out but the superior holds her back, the hostage situation in which crucial characters are given big moments, and the idiotic high police official who will eventually pull the hero off the case.
The movie is co-written and directed by Tony Leung Hung-Wah (you'd think the movie credits would make some of distinction from the other Tony Leungs out there). The fight sequences involving our heroines are watchable. It's during the fights and the finale when PTU File: Death Trap does really comes alive and becomes what it wants to be: an action movie chick flick.
There's even a car chase in which a hostage, a fat woman throws up on everybody. Did we really need to see that? I wanted to watch the chase, but I was put off by all the vomiting.
The shootouts are horribly edited. I mean, look at the shootout with Michael Wong and his crew. The CGI is so lazily done, it almost looks cartoonish.
Another one of the movie's redeeming values are the film's three heroines who all look cute, but that's all they have going for them. The performances are horrible, and since there's so many things going on in this movie, it's hard to care.
There's a reference to Infernal Affairs II, in which a bad guy is given a "legal" copy of the film. Later the DVD is crushed to bits by a car. Watching that happen, I was deeply offended since I think that Infernal Affairs II is a much superior film than this low-budget fare.

Great funny B-movie enjoyment
It's hard to find, but a real treat if you can. I like the whole concept of a chessy 70's gangster flick being aired on a "late night" movie program. The film is then interrupted by hilarious commercial spoofs that had me rolling. The film has lots of gun battles and sexy strippers and it is narrated like the old "untouchables" TV shows.The plot is simple, 5 hoods who wear "bullet proof" long underware take over Cleveland,By shooting every rival in sight. At the end the gangsters face off with the "Striptease Baby Dolls" in a show bar shoot-em-up. As if that wasn't enough, there's a featurette at the finish where "each" girl does a complete dance for the movie viewer. HOT!!!

A big stink of a movie
Apparently Russians have a whole different meaning to the movie title than the rest of the world does...but even then, its still a bad movie.
Yevgeni Tsyganov has the worst delivery since the older brother from Welcome to the Dollhouse Yana Yesipovich is cute but still doesn't fair much better. I will say the main antagonist of the flick does a good job but he's not on the screen long enough.
My head hurts from watching this movie. I mean even with subtitles its still confusing.
The one highlight to the movie is near the end, you'll know what I mean.
