On his birthday, wealthy Bombay-based Manmohan, whose father, Shamnarain, is overseas, finds out that he does not have any real friends. Disillusioned, he returns home, and that night overpowers a burglar, Sudesh. He decides to not call the police on the condition that he lets him live in the slums, to which Sudesh agrees, and takes him to a shanty Chawl. The next day, Manmohan, who now calls himself Shyam, meets Sudesh' sister, Shyama, and both are attracted to each other. He then sub-lets a room from a dweller, known as Mausi, and starts to sell ice-cream on the streets as a living. He indirectly uses his wealth and influence to help some of the impoverished residents. He then proposes to Shyama and she accepts - and it is this acceptance that will soon pit him not only against his snobbish and enraged father - but also against Sudesh as well as a much-feared gangster, Ranvir, who wants to wed Shyama at any and all costs.

plot summary

This movie starring Dev Anand and Mala Sinha is quite like the black and white classic ASLI NAQLI starring Sadhana and also Dev Anand which had the classic Rafi song EK BOOTH BANAUNGA AUR POOJA KAROONGA. The story revolves around Dev Anand who is a very rich man and gets disappointed by his wealth and goes to live in a poor neighboorhood masquerading as a poor man. Here he meets a poor girl (Mala Sinha instead of Sadhana) and they fall in love. Though this movie has some great songs like Zindagi hai Kya Sun Meri Jaan, Koi Sone Ki Dil Wala and Jaa Re Udhja Re Panchhi the other movie ASLI NAQLI was 10 times better probably because the movie was directed by the maestro HRISHIKESH MUKHERJEE the maker f classics like Anand, Namak Halaal (the only 2 movies starring Amitabh and Rajesh Khanna), Abhimaan, Milli, Musafir, Bawarchi, Bemisaal and many many more. Still worth a watch. watch out for a very very young Amjad Khan in the end of the movie (he was barely 12 years old in a scene with his real life father Jayant.

Shekhar lives a poor lifestyle along with his maternal uncle, Dharamdas; his aunt; a cousin, Sita - who is separated from her husband, Mahesh; and also has a sister, Gauri, who had eloped with her lover and everyone believes is dead. He studies in college along with wealthy fellow collegian, Bela. Both do not get along, but that changes when her dad comes to know about Shekhar's good character and thinks that he will be a suitable son-in-law. He approaches Dharamdas and arranges their marriage with the condition that Shekhar move in with his family, to which Dharamdas and Shekhar agree but Bela's mom is displeased as she would like her daughter to marry Rajan Murari, the son of their employee, Govindram. In Ayodhya there are festivities all over as the day has arrived when Raja Dashrath will be crowning his eldest son, Bhagwan Shri Ram, as the future King. Review :

Enchanting

I just watched this film and I was absolutely enchanted. I should mention that I am not an Indian, not have I watched very many Indian films. Sampoorna Ramayana is technically simplistic and sometimes naïve (from the 2009 Hollywood point of view), but a visual delight and an inspired introduction into this chapter of Indian mythology. The musical episodes are excellent, and some are simply unforgettable (e. g. the story of god Kama – the dancing is mesmerizing - or Ram's song for Seeta or Surpankha's song or the song by the two Seeta's sons). Several episodes had an enormous element of surprise and awe for me (not to give too much away I would mention Hanuman's interrogation and Ravan's monologue among others). Speaking of actors I'd like to stress their striking looks which were quite fitting for a magical story of divine adventures. To sum it up – the film should not be judged by the modern standards but rather it should be evaluated from the point of view of its own artistic universe. Sampoorna Ramayana is ambitious and beautiful (if too long at the beginning) and a must for anyone interested in India.
