Review :

Actually a good movie

Although I don't really like most of the old school kung fu movies because of the lack of serious acrobatic skills, this is one that made me watch the whole time. It's an entertaining movie with some good action moments. 7/10.

Havaldar Major Jaswant Singh (Jayant) makes a citizen's arrest of petty thief Ajit (Dharmendra) and hands him over to the police, and after due process of law he is sentenced to six months in jail. After completing his sentence, the jailer asks him to approach Jaswant Singh for employment, and he does so. Jaswant asks him to help him with his farming work. Ajit meets Anju (Asha Parekh) and both fall in love. Ajit comes to know of Jabbar Singh (Vinod Khanna) a dacait who is terrozing the surrounding community, and Ajit decides to take on Jabbar. In retaliation, Jabbar abducts Anju, and instructs Ajit to come unarmed. Ajit decides to follow these instructions, however, as soon as he reaches Jabbar's hideout, he too is captured, and at the mercy of Jabbar and his woman (Laxmi Chhaya), who has been scorned by Ajit, and it is now up to her to decide Ajit's fate.

satisfaction guaranteed

okay, lets just put it this way: if you enjoyed sholay, you will definitely love this movie. if you watch the film you will see many similarities with sholay. sholay is considered to be one of the all time great indian movies because of its successful adaptation of a spaghetti western, great performances by the two main characters, and a super villain in amjad khan(gabar singh). this movie is also an "indian western", but instead of two heroes it only has one, dharmendra. his characters personality is a blend of veeru, and jai in sholay. this movie also has a villain, played by vinod khanna, in one of his finest performances, who is incidentally named "jabbar singh". may not be as good as sholay, but comes extremely close. if it were made after sholay, you would think of it as a nice rip off; however, it was made before sholay, therefore it is a trend setter. by the way this movie is complete on all accounts of indian cinema: it has a great story, excellent performances, and great music. satisfaction is guaranteed. also for some reason pratiggya, another super "indian western" is not listed in IMDB, check it out also.

Swell!

Jump is not only hilarious and full of social satire, but the film craft is wonderful. Shaped, balanced, paced well, never too busy. Not to mention psychedelic. Pared down to the essentials, so it hits hard and big. Never got the widespread attention it deserved. One of the best of the time, or of now.

I saw it because the ad said it was made by the folk who made Joe, which was some serious and well-made stuff. And sure enough.

If you like Jump, or if don't, you should see Bliss (not the late 90's Hollywood fluff, but the mid 80's Australian movie-of-the-year). Bliss is one of my three favoritest movies ever.

Feng Fei Fei (Lady with a Sword) - Well done mix of drama and wuxia action

Once again the opening of the Shaw library is revealing many gems that have been hidden from non-Chinese audiences for too long. While solidly grounded in the wuxia tradition and very much in the style of the 1960's Shaw style this film is notable for a very unusual reason. It's one of the very few martial art films ever directed by a woman. Kuo Pao-Shu, an accomplished 32 year old actress at this point, gets behind the camera for her directorial debut.

The films opens as Feng Ying Ying is rushing home to her parents after her husband, a security officer, is murdered while protecting a shipment of treasure. With her young son in tow, they stop for a rest but cross paths with a quartet of rogues. The lead rogue decides to rape Ying Ying while the others beat the son for sport. Ying Ying has a sword but is outmatched. She struggles with the rogue but that angers him and he ends up killing her. The boy escapes and rushes to the Feng mansion. The Feng elders are not there but his aunt, Fei Fei is. Outraged at the double tragedy, she immediately sets out to find her sister's killers with the young boy. Although she is an excellent martial artist, she disguises herself as a man. They find them but she is dismayed to discover that the lead rogue is her fiancé, the son of her father's best friend!

THe film is very accomplished and well paced for a first time effort. Kuo manages to keep the action taut and extensive while giving the film a woman's viewpoint at the same time. It makes what could have been a standard revenge film into something with more depth. Kuo went on to direct a few more films including the classic "The Master Strikes".

The fights scenes are firmly planted in the style of the era. While energetic and well- choreographed, there's a lot of trampoline work and reverse-filmed jumping onto walls and building roofs. It's fun.

Remake of Japanese movie

This is the Chinese version of Japanese movie Eleven Samurai. Band of six assassins are sent to kill brother of emperor who killed theirs boss who were trying to defend few peasants. Emperor's brother can't be prosecuted for his crime and the whole clan should suffer because of theirs boss offended emperor's relative. One member of clan convince authority to postpone the verdict of informal court for one month and thats the time-frame for assassins kill the emperors brother who is heading to visit emperor in major city. There is not so much fighting scenes and swordsmanship is really poor here. Although it is standard Chinese swordplay movie and the story is good.
