For Riki Takeuchi Enthusiasts.

Seriously . . . why would you really watch this movie? If you aren't a fan of Riki Takeuchi, this movie will make your head spin with it's apparent suckitude. However, as a Riki Takeuchi movie that features him speaking English and shooting up Los Angeles, it's a seriously awesome flick. Basically, it's a terrible 80s-style action movie. The production values, over-the-top action, and ridiculous plot would have been de rigeur in 1986. But being a late-90s movie, it's even sillier. The cheese is laid on thick, but not unintentionally. It's very tongue-in-cheek in a way. Takeuchi's performance is strong, as usual, even given the crappy trappings. He sneers, shows off his coiffed doo, and impales people on katanas - all bases covered. And there's a Chevy Nova SS for no reason! And it's pee-yellow - where else are you going to see that?

Student movie that made it Nexflix... Why?

The file is so low budget that the "stars" must have used their own money to make the thing. The sword fighting. Oh the sword fighting. My brother and I used to play with my fathers civil war swords and we had more fun and looked better doing it that these people. Don't just stand there! This film isn't really even a B movie. It's more like a bunch of friend got together on a weekend and bashed out a script on Friday. Filmed on Saturday and drank heavily and watched it on Sunday. I am sure they had more fun making it than anyone will ever have watching it.

Give this one a miss unless you like real low level crap and you and some friends can add an alternate dialog. While drinking heavily and then maybe...

Phairii phinaat paa mawrana (2006)

Vengeance sees a violent and stubborn cop chase a gang of escaped convicts into a cursed jungle. Lots of monsters, magic and mysticism abound. It's interesting for awhile, with some shootouts and exposition setting the scene. There's a creepy but awesome Tiger Wasp attack, that has a man ripped apart in gorerious old school fashion. However, as the monsters get bigger the effects become worse. A group of baby alligator/tree lizard things are neither convincing as animatronics or CGI. Both are rather jolty but are luckily still fun to watch. A giant CGI snake/demon is next up, which is confusingly bad, as it is so hard to get any perspective on the creature, I was surprised every time the snake grabbed someone as it never looked close enough. By the time people start turning into tree demons it's all a bit chaotic. The designs of these human/tree hybrids are wonderful, with leaf like wings and bark like skin. Again the mixture of CGI and make-up is jarring. Overall this is a fun monster movie, but has too many flaws within it's overlong running time.

strong performance by manoj bajpai

Shool is an excellent crime drama about corruption and murky politics in India. This plot isn't anything new, but what makes the movie work is the mind-blowing performance of Manoj Bajpai as an honest cop trying to do his job in a corrupt environment. With his work in this film, Bajpai has proven himself as a great character actor, at par with another cinema great, Shah Rukh Khan. Both these actors have proven that you don't need good looks to make good movies.

Aside from Bajpai, Shool is filled with wonderful performances, such as the de-glamorized Raveena Tandon's heart-breaking portrayal the police officer's wife, and Sayaji Shinde's genuinely scary villain!

A mature film intended for a mature audience, Shool is a film that shouldn't be missed by anyone looking for quality in the otherwise lackluster world of Indian cinema!
